Apostle Phrances Larry
Wilbert’s Homegoing Service was held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Herbert Thompson Funeral Home. His sister, the Apostle Phrances Larry assisted by her husband the Bishop Curtis Larry, presided over the memorial. Wilbert quietly entered into rest on June 13, 2014 in Daytona Beach, FL. He grew up in Georgia where he accepted God early in his life. Leaving there he lived in the Miami Beach area for many years. Returning to Daytona Beach, he lived in Pearson before falling ill.
Wilbert’s memorial today re-kindled memories in me of how big his heart was and how when growing up he was always there for us, his younger siblings. For a lot of reasons, 1963 was a really tough year for the younger siblings; for example we lived in 3 different cities, (Miami, & Daytona Bch, FL and Sylvania, GA) went to 3 different schools under some pretty rough circumstances. For me Wilbert was the reason I was able to survive that period without becoming truant or criminal. He was the one person that was always there for us; doing his best to make sure we were cared for. I am eternally grateful that he was there!
Wilbert’s journey was no “crystal stair,” challenging for him throughout; but he faced each day with a love for God and family, a good work ethic and abundant energy. His kind heart was unmatched and made him very special to our family and his community.
Farewell Wilbert, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin; you will live in our hearts forever!
Wilbert is survived by two former wives Sherry (Doyle) Ponder and Doris (Forston) Ponder; his children Ed (LaTasha), Adriane, Tara and Tobin. His grandchildren, Khambrel, Derrell, Lael, Marchee, Robert, Darvel, Brian, Chris, Adrian, Teria, Tekaiya and Tyriq. His sisters and brothers Catherine, Jeff (Donna), Betty (Marvin), Robert, Aleem (Patricia), Jimmie, Mary, Frances (Curtis), Dave (Sharon), Gregory (Shirley) and Earnestine and a host of nieces and nephews.
